DERBY SIEGER!

ratiopharm Ulm and fans were ready for Saturday nights Baden Wurtemburg Derby against rival Walter Tigers Tubingen.  After a strong team effort that put five players in double figures, ratiopharm Ulm and fans celebrated an intense 100-83 road win Saturday night at Paul Horn Arena in Tubingen.  Lee Humphrey sparked a second quarter run hitting a perfect four of four from three point range in the first half as Ulm built a 54-42 advantage at the half.  Robin Benzing led the Ulm attack with 16 points 5 rebounds, Coleman Collins added 15 points 8 boards, John Bryant powered his way to a 14 point 10 rebound double double, Lee Humphrey finished with 13 points and Per Gunther added 12 points 3 assists in the win.  Earning their fourth victory over rival Tubingen in five trips to Paul Horn Arena, ratiopharm Ulm and fans celebrated this chapter of the intense rivalry as 'Derby Sieger!'

ratiopharm Ulm fans packed the tubingen stands with an enthusiastic, loud fan block for Saturday nights Baden Wurtemburg Derby at Paul Horn Arena in Tubingen.

ratiopharm ulm fans were ready for the next chapter in this fantastic Baden Wurtemburg Derby between Ulm and Tubingen.  Two full fan buses reinforced the Ulm team bus and as soon as Paul Horn Arena doors opened, Ulm fans filled the stands with energy and support for the orange and black.  As Ulm players warmed up on the floor, Ulm fans warmed up in the stands.  On the floor and in the fan block, everyone was excited about the Derby.

Pregame, ratiopharm Ulm and Walter Tigers Tubingen went about their business with focus and anticipation as both entered Saturday's Derby with positive feelings coming off wins.  Tubingen's strong road win in Oldenburg last weekend gave the Tigers confidence while Ulm's first win of the season over Gottingen had Ulm feeling good.

With momentum from last weeks home win over BG Gottingen, ratiopharm Ulm enjoyed another strong practice week.  Guest coach, Svetislav Pesic spent time with the ratiopharm Ulm team and the legendary European coach added something special to the weeks preparation.

At tip off, Ulm and Tubingen were charged with intensity and energy.  Ulm opened with an early 5-0 lead behind strong inside play of John Bryant.  Tubingen battled back to even the game at 7 four minutes into the game.  Tigers forward Dane Watts drilled a three giving Tubingen their first lead 10-9 at the mid point of the first quarter.  With energy from the home crowd, Tubingen led 12-9 after adding another basket.

ratiopharm Ulm ran into early foul trouble as both Robin Benzing and Rocky Trice picked up two fast fouls in the first quarter.  Facing an early test, the Ulm team needed players to step up.  Entering into action, ratiopharm Ulm turned to captain Lee Humphrey and hardworking Sebastian Betz.  Coming off the bench for the first time in two season, Ulm sharpshooter Lee Humphrey subbed in for Rocky Trice while Basti Betz replaced Robin Benzing.

Lee Humphrey buried three three's and Sebastian Betz sank one igniting a 14-2 Ulm run.  Not only overcoming the first quarter foul trouble, the Ulm bench sparked a momentum building run and the hot three point shooting brought the fans into the game early.  ratiopharm Ulm finished the first quarter with a 23-14 lead.

ratiopharm Ulm captain Lee Humphrey keyed a first half run as the sharpshooter caught fire with four three pointers.

As Quarter two began, Sean Sonderleiter sank a jumper from the right wing from an endline inbound play.  Radovan Markovic responded with a three from the right wing for Tubingen.  Coleman Collins extended to finish a drive with a basket through a foul adding a three point play for Ulm.  Joe Herber sank a transition three for Tubingen before Sean Sonderleiter grabbed an offensive rebound for a put-back bucket through another Tiger foul.  Chris Oliver sank a pullup jumper for Tubingen.  Coleman Collins drove strong from the top of the key and drew a foul but sank only one of two free throws.  Tubingen's Ken Williams slammed home the next bucket for the Tigers.  Lee Humphrey drove strong drawing a foul and the Ulm captain sank two foul shots maintaining the lead.  Per Gunther tacked on two more free throws.

Following a strong defensive stop, Ulm fed the post to center John Bryant who found a baseline cutting Sebastian Betz for the next Ulm score.  John Bryant cleaned up the offensive boards on the next Ulm possession for another basket.  Joe Herber responded for Tubingen with a smooth pivot into a fadeaway jumper.  Branislav Ratkovica buried a top of the key three for Tubingen. Coleman Collins spun baseline drawing defenders before dishing to Ulm center John Bryant who finished through traffic in the lane.

After quality minutes and plays that helped build a lead, ratiopharm Ulm subbed out Humphrey and Betz re-entering both Robin Benzing and Rocky Trice.  Moments later, Benzing buried back to back threes sending the Ulm fan block into celebration.  Tubingen called timeout with Ulm up 46-32 and 3:23 remaining in the half.  Chris Oliver scored inside for the Tigers out of the timeout and Per Gunther sank two more free throws for Ulm on the other end.  Anatoly Kashirov dove down the lane for a slam for Tubingen.

Leading 48-37, Ulm huddled in a timeout with 1:06 to go in the second quarter.  Once again, Lee Humphrey energized his team with a corner three extending Ulm's lead to 51-37.  On Ulm's next possession, Travis Walton sank another energizing three from the same right corner.  Ulm's lead swelled to 54-39.  Walton alertly used Ulm's last foul to-give and Tubingen held a sideline inbound with 3 seconds in the half.  Ulm used their second timeout to prepare for the last second defensive situation.  But Radovan Markovic hit a buzzer beating three giving Tubingen fans the last cheer of the first half.

At the half, Ulm led 54-42.  The focused first half performance featured tremendous production from the Ulm bench as Lee Humphrey ignited the Ulm offense with a perfect four for four from beyond the arc.  Energizing the team and fans with his hot shooting, the Ulm captain gave his team a charge in the already emotional Baden Wurtemburg Derby.  Along with Lee's excellent play off the Ulm bench, Sebastian Betz, Travis Walton and Sean Sonderleiter all gave their team a boost with quality minutes.  As a team Ulm shot 55% from the floor hitting 8 of 11 threes (73%) and 10 of 14 free throws (71%) while outrebounding the rival Tigers 21-10.  Ulm also dished out 13 assists in the first half demonstrating good ballmovement and teamwork.

In the halftime lockerroom, Ulm focused on their defensive work specifically defending two Tubingen actions which provided problems in the first twenty minutes.  Making adjustments on the defensive end, Ulm knew every Derby game would be a full 40 minute contest and the job was only half complete.  With momentum, ratiopharm Ulm returned to the floor for layup lines focused for a strong start to the third quarter.

As the second half opened, Tubingen clawed away at the Ulm lead.  As with any rivalry, a full 40 minute game is expected every time ratiopharm Ulm and Walter Tigers Tubingen meet.  It was not a surprise that the Tigers made a third quarter run.  In the first five minutes of the third quarter, Tubingen rallied to outscore Ulm 12-5 cutting the Ulm lead to 59-54. Picking up their pressure in the third quarter, the Tigers turned up the heat in the Jungle of Paul Horn Arena.

Ulm's hot-shooting from the first half helped them build a lead, but their team defense in the second half helped them fight off the Tubingen run. Fouls continued to be an issue for Ulm as Robin Benzing picked up his fourth foul with three minutes to go in the third.  With Tubingen closing in, a Chris Oliver basket cut the Ulm lead to 61-55 late in the third.  But Ulm played with poise and put together a strong finish to the third quarter as Coleman Collins banked in a left wing three, Rocky Trice got a bucket and Travis Walton hit a pull up J rebuilding Ulm's lead to ten 68-57 at the end of the third.  The strong finish to the third rebuilt Ulm's cushion, but to fight off the Tigers in this intense Derby, ratiopharm Ulm needed continued quality minutes from their entire team.

In the fourth quarter, Sebastian Betz ran the floor strong and drew a foul on ratiopharm Ulm's first possession. Off the second free throw, Coleman Collins came up with a loose ball rebound in the lane and finished a reverse layup for an Ulm basket.  Ken Williams powered his way to two points for the Tigers.  Sean Sonderleiter grabbed another important offensive rebound leading to an extra possession which Coleman Collins turned into two points for Ulm. Dane Watts finished a second shot for Tubingen.  Ken Williams finished a shot swooping under the rim for another Tiger score.  Tubingen's surge gave them momentum as they trimmed the deficit to 72-64 with under 8 minutes to play.  At the other end, a Coleman Collins pass was deflected out of bounds giving Ulm endline inbound with 3 seconds on the shot clock.  Ulm took this time for subs.

ratiopharm Ulm's bench once again gave the team quality minutes as Lee Humphrey, Sebastian Betz, Sean Sonderleiter and Travis Walton played key roles in Saturday's Derby game.  Rested and ready, Ulm subbed in Per Gunther, Rocky Trice, Robin Benzing and John Bryant for the stretch run.  Immediately, the unit went to work.  From the endline play, Robin Benzing took a pass on a basket cut and finished through a foul for a key AND1 three point play.  Tubingen called a timeout with Ulm up 74-64 and 7:18 remaining in the game.  Out of the timeout, Robin Benzing cooly sank the free throw pushing Ulm up 11, 75-64.  On the next Tubingen possession, action flowed until officials called John Bryant for a foul as he worked to stop Branislav Ratkovica on a ballscreen.  Unfortunately, the Tubingen table ran into technical difficulties.

As officials attempted to correct the problem, the game was delayed.  Ulm remained focused through the delay and aimed to maintain their momentum.  Out of the stoppage, Ulm defense dug in earning a strong stop as Rocky Trice aggressively grabbed a defensive board.  Tubingen attempted to change the rhythm of the game by playing a 2-3 zone.  Ulm quickly moved the basketball eventually finding Coleman Collins who wheeled baseline under the rim for a athletic stuff which was goaltended for two.  Ulm led 77-64.  Ratkovica hit Chris Oliver in the left corner for a three cutting the gap back to ten 77-67.  After the score, Ulm turned the ball over on an 8 second backcourt violation returning possession to Tubingen.  The Tigers had a tremendous opportunity.

But Rocky Trice poked loose a steal on the ensuing sideline inbound play and raced to the other end where he finished an extended hook layup off glass through a foul for an emotional score.  The Ulm fan block went crazy for the big play.  Ulm led 79-67.  Nicolai Simon sank a long two from an endline inbound play bringing the Tigers back within ten 79-69.  Once again attacking the Tubingen zone, Ulm ballmovement swung from side to side before Coleman Collins found an open John Bryant at the rim where the skillful big man finished another bucket in the paint.  Anatoly Kashirov tipped in a basket for Tubingen before Collins found Bryant again at the rim against the Tigers zone.  Ulm led 83-71 with five minutes to play.  Kashirov scored again on a move from the left block.  The teams exchanged stops before Rocky Trice was fouled in transition earning two free throws.  Rocky converted both foul shots pushing Ulm's lead to 85-73 with 4:19 left.  Ulm's defense dug in again as Robin Benzing came up with a strong defensive rebound and was fouled.  In the bonus, Benzing cooly sank both foul shots extending Ulm's advantage to 87-73.  Ulm's defense earned another stop as John Bryant collected the Tigers miss.  On the offensive glass it was John Bryant again playing volleyball as he tapped the ball to himself before tipping the ball in for another big Ulm score.  Ulm led 89-73 and was closing in on the Derby victory.  Ulm fans could feel it.  Coleman Collins came down with the defensive rebound on the next possession before Dane Watts fouled Per Gunther just across the halfcourt line.  Per drilled both free throws pushing Ulm's cushion to 91-73.  Anatoly Kashirov hit a short jumper for the Tigers but Rocky Trice finished a midlane runner maintaining a 93-75 advantage.

As the final minutes ticked down, Ulm fans chanted and cheered as the team closed in on victory.  Ulm subbed in fan favorite Christian Grosse and the hardworking team player finished a breakaway layin that was goaltended to get into the scorebook.  Under one minute, Ulm's Walt Baxley took the ball and raced coast to coast scooping in a layup off glass putting the finishing touches on the 100-83 Baden Wurtemburg Derby win.

ratiopharm Ulm featured balanced scoring in the win as Robin Benzing topscored with 16 points 5 rebounds, Coleman Collins added a strong 15 points 8 rebounds 4 assists, John Bryant finished with a 14 point 10 rebound double double, Lee Humphrey sparked Ulm with 13 points on a perfect four of four from three and Per Gunther chipped in 12 points 4 assists on a perfect 10 of 10 from the foul line.  As a team, Ulm hit 57% from the floor making 10 of 16 threes (63%) and 24 of 32 free throws (75%) while outrebounding Tubingen 41-27 and dishing out a team total of 19 assists. Tubingen shot 48% from the floor making 6 of 22 threes (27%) and 11 of 25 free throws (44%) in the loss.  Chris Oliver led the Tigers with 17 points while Branislav Ratkovica added 16 points 9 assists. 

Immediately after the final horn, ratiopharm Ulm sprinted toward the stands to celebrate with their fans and enjoy the intense Derby win together.

Earning the hardfought road win over Baden Wurtemburg rival Walter Tigers Tubingen, ratiopharm Ulm picked up their second consecutive win and second victory of the season.
