ULM TIPS TRIER IN TWO OVERTIMES!

ratiopharm Ulm outlasted TBB Trier in an exciting 90-85 double overtime win Sunday afternoon at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.  John Bryant posted a powerful 27 point 18 rebound double double and Dan Fitzgerald hit several big shots for 15 key points in the hardfought win.  Former ratiopharm Ulm point guard Dru Joyce enjoyed an excellent 24 point 5 rebound 5 assist night for Trier in the loss.

After Friday nights road loss in Hagen, ratiopharm Ulm was refocused and ready to play.  Before the game, Ulm made their adjustments from the uptempo offensive game in Hagen to the physical defensive style they expected from Trier.  A team with tremendous heart this season, Trier entered Ulm shorthanded without All Star forward Philip Zweiner and shooting guard Oskar Fassler.  Sunday afternoon against Trier was also 'Family Day' at Sportszentrum Kuhberg adding to the second game of Ulm's two game weekend.

Ulm won the tipoff and immediately went to work.  On the fist offensive possession, Robin Benzing's post up rimmed out, but center John Bryant cleaned up the miss for an offensive rebound and score.  At the other end, Coleman Collins blocked a shot and Ulm's fast break resulted in a Robin Benzing layup for a 4-0 lead.  Dru Joyce hit a floater along the right baseline for Trier's first bucket.  John Bryant scored on a jumphook from the block giving Ulm a 6-2 lead.  At the other end, Maik Zirbes drew a foul and the talented young German post man hit one of two free throws.  Ulm's Coleman Collins scored on a cutting layup giving Ulm an early 8-3 lead at the 7:50 mark.  Trier's Barry Stewart stuck a top of the key three pointer cutting the score to 8-6 but John Bryant powered his way to an offensive rebound putback score for a 10-8 Ulm lead.  Maik Zirbes banked in a post move midlane but Coleman Collins cut to the basket for a dunk and a 12-8 Ulm lead.

With Ulm on top early, Trier fought back.  Stewart used a crafty shot fake to draw a foul on Rocky Trice that led to one of two free throw makes for the Trier guard.  Moments later George Evans scored in the paint for Trier cutting Ulm's lead to 12-11.  John Bryant responded for Ulm with an AND1 three point play in the lane giving Ulm a 15-11 lead at the five minute mark.  George Evans scored with a post move for Trier before Dru Joyce added a layup evening the score at 15.

At the other end, Rocky Trice drew a foul and made one of two free throws for a 16-15 Ulm lead.  George Evans scored on a hook shot pushing Trier back up 17-16.  John Bryant collected another offensive rebound and scored reclaiming an 18-17 lead for Ulm.  Dru Joyce drew a foul in transition and retook a 19-18 Trier lead with two free throws.  Ulm came up empty and John Bynum was fouled in transition leading to one of two from the foul line giving Trier a 20-18 advantage with 1:09 in the first quarter.  Ulm's next shot rimmed out, but Ulm's Sebastian Betz drew a charge on the defensive end with 25.3 seconds to go in the first quarter giving Ulm the last shot.  Tommy Mason-Griffin made it count with a smooth pullup jumpshot from the elbow to tie the score at 20 at the end of one.

As quarter two opened, Sean Sonderleiter sank an elbow jumpshot for a 22-20 Ulm lead.  Barry Stewart answered for Trier with a three to claim a 23-22 advantage.  Tommy Mason-Griffin buried a corner jumpshot retakking a 24-23 lead for Ulm.  George Evans scored inside for Trier giving the guests a 25-24 lead.  Ulm's Dan Fitzgerald drilled the first of his four important three pointers from the top of the key for a 27-25 Ulm lead.  Rocky Trice came up with a steal and run out slam extending Ulm's lead to 29-25 at the 6:31 mark.  A Per Gunther drive and finish added two more for a 31-25 lead.  John Bynum got a fastbreak bucket finishing a 2 on 1 cutting the gap to 31-27.  Ulm took a timeout at 4:30 of the second quarter.

Out of the timeout, Ulm went inside to John Bryant who scored on a strong post move lifting Ulm to a 33-27 lead.  But Trier's Dru Joyce responded with a strong finish in the lane off glass.  Two John Bryant free throws extended Ulm's advantage to 35-29 before a Coleman Collins layup through a foul pushed Ulm ahead 37-29.  Before Coleman could complete his three point play with a free throw, Trier took a timeout with 2:07 in the half.  Out of the timeout, Coleman proceeded to miss the free throw off the front end of the rim.  In a lucky bounce, the ball ricocheted right to Collins who instantly elevated for a powerful slam over a Trier defender.  The monster dunk energized Ulm and gave them a 39-29 lead.  Moments later Rocky Trice sank two free throws pushing Ulm up 41-29 with 45.8 seconds in the half.  Dru Joyce responded with a late AND1 three point play for Trice cutting the gap to 41-32.  Off the free throw, a Trier press forced an Ulm turnover that led to a Barry Stewart layup.  Trier cut the deficit to 41-34.  Ulm took a timeout with 13.4 seconds in the half.  Out of the timeout, ratiopharm Ulm guard Rocky Trice took control milking the clock before slicing down the middle of the Trier defense for an emphatic one hand slam.  Rocky's dunk put an exclamation point on the last points of the first half.

At the half, Ulm held a 43-34 lead.  Ulm shot 50% from the floor making 1 of 5 threes and 6 of 10 free throws.  Ulm outrebounded Trier 24-18 in the first half.   Meanwhile, Trier hit 37% from the field including 2 of 8 threes and 6 of 9 free throws.  Ulm used their inside game effectively in the first 20 minutes as center John Bryant powered his way to 15 points 9 boards and 2 blocks while Coleman Collins added 8 points 3 rebounds and 1 block.

As the second half opened, Ulm came out of the lockerroom unconcentrated.  After an empty first possession, George Evans scoerd on a goaltend.  Moments later Trier forward Dragan Dojcin scored on a post move.  Ulm's lead slimmed to 43-38.  John Bryant countered with two free throws and Ulm led 45-38 with 8:25 to go in the third.  George Evans scored in the lane for Trier cutting the margin to 45-40.  Moments later Dojcin slipped a crafty post to post pass in the lane to Evans for another easy basket.  An Ulm turnover led to a John Bynum layup and Ulm's lead dwindled to one, 45-44.  Ulm took a timeout at the 6:20 mark.

Trier's Dragan Dojcin finished a three point play for a 47-45 Trier lead.  Offensively, Ulm struggled to find their rhythm as Trier gained momentum.  Finally after a John Bryant block, Tommy Mason-Griffin found Dan Fitzgerald for an important three pointer to reclaim a 48-47 Ulm lead.  Unfortunately for Ulm, Tommy Mason-Griffin injured his shoulder and would not return to the game.  Trier's John Bynum scored on a step through move in the lane giving Trier a 49-48 lead but Ulm's John Bryant grabbed an offensive rebound and finished for a 50-49 Ulm advantage with 4:27 in the third.  With 3:22 on the clock, Trier took a timeout.

Ulm rebuilt their lead with another Dan Fitzgerald three, this time from Per Gunther in transition.  Two more free throws from Ulm center John Bryant extended the cushion to 55-49 with 2:08 to go in the third. Officials called Robin Benzing for an over the back foul and John Bynum converted two free throws with Trier in the bonus.  Robin Benzing drove strong from the right wing against the Trier zone for a layin and a 57-51 Ulm lead.  Dru Joyce countered with a layup for Trier before two Per Gunther free throws gave Ulm a 59-53 advantage with 34.5 seconds in the third.  A skillful reverse layup from Dru Joyce trimmed the gap to 59-55 but Dan Fitzgerald finished the quarter with a crafty scoop shot layup for a 61-55 Ulm lead after three.

In the fourth quarter, Ulm started strong with a Per Gunther three extending the lead to 64-55.  Back to back John Bynum buckets trimmed the margin to 64-59 but Rocky Trice scored to give Ulm a 66-59 lead.  Dru Joyce finished a strong AND1 three point play and Ulm led 66-62 with 8:14 remaining.  Two Robin Benznig free throws pushed Ulm up 68-62 at the 7:55 mark.  Coleman Collins made up for a bad pass turnover with an athletic block, but Dru Joyce buried a post reaction three further tightening the game at 68-65.  At the other end, Per Gunther hit a nice pullup jumper in the lane for a 70-65 Ulm lead.  Maik Zirbes sank two important free throws for Trier cutting the deficit to three with 6:25 to play.  John Bynum hit a pullup jumpshot narrowing Ulm's lead to 70-69.  Moments later, Trier had stunned Ulm with a Mail Zirbes layup and a 71-70 lead.  5:21 remained as Ulm used a timeout.

The final minutes of the fourth quarter featured two teams standing their ground.  Both team defenses established themselves.  In an intense and competitive finish, Trier maintained momentum as Ulm scrambled to stop the slide.  Finally, Trier held a 73-70 lead with 27 seconds to play.  Ulm used their final timeout to advance the ball and design their play.  Needing a big basket, Ulm inbounded the ball to center John Bryant.  Working against his defender, John found Dan Fitzgerald open on post-reaction.  Stepping up to drill a clutch shot, Dan hit the game-tying three pointer with 22 seconds to play.  Trier called for time to advance the ball and design their play.  Ulm adjusted their lineup and dug in for an important stop.  Trier inbounded the ball to Dru Joyce who cooly milked the clock at the top.  Finally, working to attack the basket, Ulm defense held up strong and regulation ended in a 73-73 tie.

In the first overtime, Ulm burst ahead on a Robin Benzing left wing three for a 78-75 lead.  Trier fought back eventually taking a 79-78 lead after a finish from George Evans.  Per Gunther hit two clutch free throws lifting Ulm up 80-79 with 12.3 seconds.  At the other end, Dru Joyce drew a foul on a strong drive.  Making the first to even the game at 80, Dru's second shot rattled out. Ulm grabbed the rebound and Per Gunther frantically pushed the ball upcourt working for a last shot.  As Per dribbled hard to the right wing, he stopped on a dime and skipped a throwback pass to a wide open Robin Benzing.  Stepping into a catch and shoot transition three from the left wing, Robin's shot bounced out as the overtime buzzer sounds.  Family Day at Sportszentrum Kuhberg was bigger and better than ever with two overtimes!

In the second overtime, it is fair to say Ulm's depth became an advantage.  All three starters in Trier's backcourt finished the game with 45 minutes or more.  Ulm center John Bryant powered his way for two in the paint giving Ulm an 83-80 lead.  Moments later, Robin Benzing pushed Ulm up 85-81.  But Trier would not got away and somehow found a way to tie the score at 85 with 1 minute in the second overtime.  John Bryant came through for Ulm with another basket in the lane and Ulm led 87-85.  After a stop and sideline inbound situation, Trier used a timeout.  Ulm was called for a five second violation on the sideline play returning possession to Trier.  On the ensuing possession, Ulm defense forced a turnover on the sideline.  Ulm used their final timeout with 3 seconds to play.  Advancing the ball, Ulm's sideline play resulted in a Coleman Collins AND1 dunk.  Completing the three point play at the foul line, Coleman sealed the hardfought double overtime 90-85 home win.

ratiopharm Ulm was led by John Bryant's 27 point 18 rebound double double while Dan Fitzgerald drilled 4 of 9 threes for 15 points off the bench.  Robin Benzing added 11 points 5 rebounds, Coleman Collins chipped in 11 points 4 boards and Per Gunther finished with 11 points in the win.  As a team, ratiopharm Ulm shot 41% from the floor making 6 of 21 threes (29%) and 20 of 27 free throws (74%) while outrebounding Trier 48-46.  Trier also shot 41% from the field hitting 3 of 16 threes (19%) and 22 of 30 from the foul line (73%).  Dru Joyce led the Trier attack with 24 points 5 rebounds 5 assists while John Bynum finished with 18 points 9 rebounds and George Evans added 18 points 8 boards in the loss.
