ratiopharm Ulm guard Rocky Trice finishes at extension against the Deutsche Bank Skyliners Friday night at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.  Rocky was excellent for Ulm scoring 15 points with 4 rebounds and 4 assists in the game.

At tip off, both teams were focused as they prepared for the typical tight Ulm-Frankfurt matchup.  While ratiopharm Ulm looked to bounce back from last weekends tough road loss in Hagen, the Skyliners were riding high after their thirty point thrashing of Walter Tigers Tubingen.  Ulm and Frankfurt started the game fast.  Winning the tip, Ulm's Coleman Collins poked the ball forward to Rocky Trice who raced toward the basket and drilled a foul line pullup jumper.  Christian Burns burst up the floor scoring in transition and Coleman Collins powered his way to two in the paint.  Ulm led 6-2.  The Skyliners responded with a 7-0 run with fast transition play as Derrick Allen ran the floor for a score, Seth Doliboa sank a three and Quantez Robertson finished a layup.  Ulm's Per Gunther buried a top of the key three to even the score at 13 before Frankfurt's Greg Jenkins scored on the block and Ulm's Christian Burns finished a fast break layup.  The teams exchanged late first quarter runs as the Skyliners surged to a 24-17 lead before Ulm finished the first quarter on a 7-4 pace.  Ulm's Robin Benzing made his presence felt against his former team late in the first drilling a deep left corner three off an endline inbound play.  Trailing 28-24 at the end of one, Ulm huddled at the break with focus on several defensive breakdowns.

As quarter two opened, Ulm and Frankfurt again were nose to nose.  Quantez Robertson buried a corner three that bounced high off the rim only to drop in giving the Skyliners a 31-24 lead.  But Ulm responded with a quick 6-0 run sparked by a Christian Burns layup and Rocky Trice top of the key three.  Moments later, Robin Benzing would pull Ulm even at 33-33 with his second three of the game.  Both teams worked to establish the post as Ulm's Coleman Collins and Frankfurt's Greg Jenkins exchanged baskets.  Ulm eventually led 38-37.  It would be their last of the game.  Frankfurt's Seth Doliboa sank a tough shot reclaiming the lead for the Skyliners 39-38 and Frankfurt would not look back.  Back to back Doliboa buckets pushed the Skyliners to 44-41 before Robin Benzing buried his third three of the game.  Unfortunately for Ulm, a late first half run pushed the Skyliners advantage to 52-44 at the break.  A Pascal Roller three and Doliboa fast break finish gave Frankfurt momentum going into halftime.

At the half, Ulm felt good about their offensive work but discussed several aspects of their defensive play. Statistically, Ulm had hit 49% from the floor and 36% from three.  But the Skyliners shot a sizzling 60% from the floor and 60% from three point land.

As the second half opened, both teams worked to find their rhythm.  Coleman Collins and Rocky Trice got buckets early in the third pulling Ulm within 52-48.  Tailing 58-52, Ulm made several small mistakes that opened the door for a Frankfurt run.  A Pascal Roller jumper and Quantez Robertson three pushed the Frankfurt advantage to 63-54.  The Skyliners defense stiffened.  Ulm's Sebastian Betz buried a corner three and John Bryant scored on a stickback but the margin maintained at ten 70-60 and Frankfurt finished the third quarter with a 76-62 lead.

In the fourth, Ulm's offense cooled as the experienced Skyliners took control.  Christian Burns made several strong attacking drives for positive plays, but too often, the Ulm team forced drives one on one looking to make something happen.  Losing their offensive rhythm, Ulm fell behind 80-65 down the stretch before staging their comeback.  A 6-0 run from Ulm was highlighted by a steal and transition basket from Rocky Trice cutting the deficit to 80-71.  Within striking distance and with 3 minutes to work with, Ulm had their opportunity.  Unfortunately, Ulm settled for tough shots and came up empty on two important possessions.  Not giving up, a Christian Burns layin and Per Gunther three pulled Ulm within seven at 87-80.  But back to back baskets from Seth Doliboa and Aubrey Reese put Frankfurt in position to seal the game.  Up 91-80 with one minute to play, Ulm's special situation plays saw shots rim out and the Skyliners finished their 95-82 road win over ratiopharm Ulm.

As a team, ratiopharm Ulm shot 44% from the floor including 67% in the lane and 34% from three (8 for 23).  A result of their shot selection, Ulm hit only 1 of 12 mid-range jump shots against the Skyliners.  Meanwhile, Frankfurt hit 58% from the floor including 4 of 10 threes.  The Skyliners out rebounded Ulm 34-25 and hit 25 of 29 (86%) from the foul line compared with Ulm's 16 of 20 (80%).

Falling to 1-4 on the early Beko Bundesliga season, ratiopharm Ulm bords the team bus and travels to Berlin for a Sunday night tip off against ALBA 5pm at O2 World Arena.  Follow all the fast breaking ratiopharm Ulm Bundesliga Basketball action all season long on Taylorhoops.com!
