Preseason Week 4 Preview

ratiopharm Ulm Ready to hit the Road!

After hosting the 2007 Fritz & Macziol Cup at their Sportszentrum Kuhberg home last weekend, ratiopharm Ulm plays three games on the road this week as their preseason continues into Week 4.  Wednesday September 19th, ratiopharm Ulm visits cooperating partner Leitersohfen as the team plays in nearby Augsburg for the first time.  Looking ahead to this weekend, Ulm plays back to back road games in Karlsruhe Friday night and at Strassbourg France Saturday.  The three road games will provide ratiopharm Ulm excellent opportunity to continue their development and build their foundation this preseason.

Florian Mobius and Ulm's Bench will get major minutes Wednesday in Leitersohfen.

Wednesday September 19, 2007             8pm tip

ratiopharm Ulm visit Regionaliga team Leitersohfen Red Kangaroos for a midweek Wednesday night preseason matchup.  Located near the city of Augsburg, Leitersohfen won the 2.Regionaliga title last season earning the right to play in the Regionaliga this season.  ratiopharm Ulm and Leitersohfen share a positive cooperation agreement and playing in Leitersohfen is a quality way for Ulm to give to Leitersohfen and possibly attract new fans in the nearby city.  Coming off the extremely competitive Fritz & Macziol Cup, Ulm aims to use the exhibition game in Leitersohfen as "role reversal" using the opportunity for working with bench and young guards.  Leitersohfen Head Coach Stefan Goschenhofer has done excellent work with the young players on his Red Kangaroo roster and challenging themselves against ratiopharm Ulm is a great way to prepare for the new season.  Ulm aims to make the most of their visit to Leitersohfen on and off the floor.

Ulm guard EJ Gallup has been outstanding in preseason.

Friday September 21, 2007     3pm tip

Friday, ratiopharm Ulm travels west for back to back road games including a 3pm tip against Pro A BG Karlsruhe.  Relegated from the Bundesliga last season, Karlsruhe has remodeled their team under the direction of new head coach Nenad Josipovic.  Veteran players Sova Taletovic and Stefan Svitek provide quality experience with excellent perimeter shooting ability while athletic Clifford Crawford (6'4) and versatile post Brandon Gary (6'8) joing Karlsruhe as impact import players.  Big men Theodis Tarver (6'9) and Edward Seward (6'9) will man the paint for Karlsruhe. Of note, BG Karlsruhe assistant coach Peter Krautwald took his new post after several seasons as head coach in Gotha.  Prior to his position in Gotha, Peter was the assistant for Ulm's head coach Mike Taylor with the Chemntiz 99ers in 2001-2002.  Last season Ulm swept Karlsruhe winning two games but this Pro A team is better than last seasons Bundesliga squad. Feeling around Germany is that Karlsruhe could be a favorite in the Pro A this season. Two seasons ago, ratiopharm Ulm won the preseason Michilin Cup played in Karlsruhe September 2005.  Friday night this weekend, ratiopharm Ulm will stay in the same Radisson Hotel as their Michilin Cup tournament weekend and will look for similar results.  Most important, ratiopharm Ulm aims for continued progress as they build up to their Bundesliga season opener October 6th.

Ulm's Kyle Bailey has demonstrated outstanding point guard skills in preseason and continues to master the teams system.

Saturday September 22, 2007    7pm tip

Strassbourg Head Coach Eric Girard has built an outstanding team ready to challenge the French top division Pro A.  Former University of Florida point guard Eddie Shannon has been a high level European pro for his career including tremendous seasons with Plannja in Sweden for 2001-2002 where he averaged 21.3ppg, 3.6rpg, 5.8apg, 1.9spg in Russia with Ural Great Perm in the Russian A Superleague where he averaged 16.4ppg, 3.9rpg, 5.1apg, 1.8spg.  During 2003 through 2005, Shannon played with Amatori Snaidero Udine in Italy followed by a season with Dinamo Sassari in Italy Lega2 before last year with BK Ventspils in Latvia.  Scoring guard Kevin Houston adds offensive firepower with Shannon.  Houston spent several successful seasons in Belgium with Bree, Leuven and Mons.  Athletic veteran John McCord has been a winner throughout his career and will be entering his fourth season with Strassbourg as a key player for their success.  McCord was part of the "Jet Wash" team of 2002-2003 which dominated Ulm Head Coach Mike Taylor's Essex Leopards team in the British Basketball League.  In the post, Strassbourg features Jai Lewis, the centerpiece of George Mason's amazing NCAA tournament run in 2006.  Derrick Obasohan is a versatile 6'7 player who have experience in France after completing his career at Texas Arlington.  Afik Nissim is a high-level playmaker who is in his second stint with Strassbourg.  After developing in Israel and playing in the top league there, Nissim joined Strassbourg in 2003-2004 and 2004-2005 before splitting 2005-2006 playing in the Russian Superleague and in Ukraine.  Last year, Nissim returned to Strassbourg and produced 11ppg while shooting 40% from three.  Athletic forward Rob Lewin moves to Strassbourg from Pro A France Reims where he led the league in blocked shots at 2.1per game.  Sacha "The Shaker" Griffin is a veteran wing who plays very aggressively with inside and perimeter skills.  Rounding out the roster is Soumahoro Issife and Gauthier Darrigand.  This preseason, Strassbourg has already beaten top Bundesliga teams Bonn and Frankfurt.  For ratiopharm Ulm, Saturday nights trip into France to meet Strassbourg will be a tremendous challenge on the road and a terrific test during the preseason.

Ulm's Jeff Gibbs and teammates have their sights set on improvement and development in the three preseason road games this week!
