After the exciting home win over Braunschweig in their last game, ratiopharm Ulm embarked on their weekend road trip to Paderborn with many positives.  Over weeks of hardwork together, the team had made progress and put it together in beating Braunschweig.  A season of peaks and valleys, Ulm's confidence was high throughout the week building up for Saturday nights challenge in Paderborn.  But history was not on Ulm's side as they entered Saturday's game winless in three trips to Sportszentrum Maspernplatz.

While ratiopharm Ulm enered Saturday's game after a positive win, Paderborn had lost 9 consecutive games and desperately were seeking their second win of the season.  Adding to the Paderborn problems, post man Terrence Dials fell injured in their morning shootaround forcing him to sit out the evening against Ulm.

At tip off, Ulm's first possessions foreshadowed the evening events.  After winning the tip, Ulm went to Christian Burns on the block.  Making a move to the middle, the Ulm power forward missed a tough midlane pullup against Paderborn's Kevin Langford.  As Paderborn grabbed the loose ball rebound, they rushed the ball up the floor and Nicolai Simon slowly dribbled to the right off an elbow ballscreen.  Turning the corner, Simon slashed to the basket and finished at the rim for the games first points.  Ulm made plays early to take an 11-5 lead, but several missed opportunities allowed Paderborn to respond with a 9-0 run.  A dunk from Paderborn's Sefton Barrett pushed the hosts ahead for the first time on the evening 14-11, but Lee Humphrey buried a right wing three to even the score at 14 five minutes into the game.  But Ulm's problems began to present themselves and Paderborn capitalized.  First, Nicolai Simon sank an open left wing transition three before Sefton Barrett finished a three point play giving the hosts a 17-14 lead.  A late first quarter Paderborn run gave them momentum and confidence as they held a 25-19 lead after one.

Quarter two saw Paderborn build on their lead.  Coleman Collins finished strong in the lane for Ulm, but Paderborn rookie guard Lawrence Borha sank his second three of the game in response. Paderborn center Matt Terwilliger popped out of a stack to the right wing on an endline inbound play and buried a three.  Paderborn caught fire.  After an empty Ulm possession, Paderborn's DeAndre Hayes sank a long two putting Ulm down ten and when Matt Terwilliger nailed his next three, Ulm called for a timeout.  Foul trouble impacted Ulm's attack as Rocky Trice picked up his second and Robin Benzing quickly got his third foul of the first half.  Paderborn's momentum continued and their lead eclipsed the twenty point mark.  Ulm's offense sputtered and the first half ended with a big deficit.  Ulm trailed 57-38 as they regrouped in the halftime lockerroom.

At the half, Ulm had dug a hole.  In similar fashion to their recent road game in Bamberg, Ulm started the game slowly presenting themselves with soft defense that allowed easy baskets early.  The easy baskets sparked Paderborn and helped the Bundesliga's statistically last-ranked team offense to a hot shooting first half that resulted in 57 points.  Ulm's young team could not establish their rhythm as they fell off pace and allowed Paderborn to build the lead.

As the second half opened, Ulm made several adjustments that triggered a 5-0 burst.  Changing defenses and improving their intensity level, Ulm trimmed the gap to 61-48 midway through the third.  Paderborn took a timeout.  But a strong three point play from Kevin Langford helped Paderborn weather the storm and Ulm called their first timeout of the second half.  Finishing the third, Paderborn's Sefton Barrett got back to back buckets stretching the scoreboard back to 73-52 at the end of three.

In the fourth, Ulm's first few possessions saw the young team become frustrated.  After a timeout, Ulm responded with another small run.  Rocky Trice finished a three point play as Ulm kept fighting.  Teams traded baskets exchanging scores for most of the fourth as both Ulm and Paderborn took advantage of the opportunity to give everyone on their rosters playing time.  At the final buzzer, Ulm's disappointing performance resulted in a 94-73 road loss in Paderborn stretching Ulm's winless streak at Sportszentrum Maspernplatz to four.
