After playing a solid season in the Bundesliga, Nordlingen chose to move down to the ProA German second division for this season and they have rebuilt their team under new head coach Alexander Biller. Returning to the Pro A, Nordlingen was the 2007-2008 Pro A champion earning promotion into the Bundesliga. Last season in the 'New Derby', Ulm topped Nordlingen twice, winning 91-63 in the season finale May 9th (Click here for game summary) and edging January 10th Nordlingen 80-79 on a Lee Humphrey free throw (Click here for game summary). Ulm traveled to Nordlingen last preseason capturing a tight 62-60 road win in their preseason opener (click for details of Ulm @ Nordlingen last preseason). ratiopharm Ulm v Gmunden Sunday September 6th, 2009 5pm tip in Aalen
Sunday afternoon, ratiopharm Ulm host one of the top teams from the Austrian Bundesliga as the Allianz Gmunden Swans come north to take on Ulm in Aalen Germany. After a fantastic run winning Austrian championships in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009 along with Austrian Cup championships in 2003, 2004 and 2008, Gmunden made a coaching change as legendary Bob Gonnen moved onto Furstenfeld and was replaced by Matthias Fischer. Superstar guard Deteri Mayes is back for the Swans and Gmunden is strengthened by the return of wing Ian Boylan. After two strong seasons in the German Pro A, Dan Oppland looks to power the Swans inside game and solid Austrian players Peter Hutter and Mathias Mayer have been a big part of Swan success over the years. Falling short of the Austrian title last season as they fell to Wels in the Finals, Gmunden looks to bounce back with another championship run this season. Ulm and Gmunden have met before in preseason with Ulm visiting the Swans in preseason 2006 before Gmunden played in the Fritz & Macziol Cup in Ulm during preseason 2007. Allianz Gmunden Swans Eurobasket team page Darko Jukic earns contract with ratiopharm Ulm! ratiopharm Ulm announced that 19year old Danish wing Darko Jukic has earned a contract after his performance during the teams first week of practices. Coming to Ulm on a two-week tryout contract, Darko impressed the Ulm staff and team with his talent and skills earning a spot using his dual lisence practicing with the Bundesliga team while playing with Ulm's Oberliga team. Although Darko takes his game outside Denmark, he remains a top prospect for the Danish National team as a scoring wing. Darko will wear jersey number 11 for ratiopharm Ulm this season.

PER GUNTHER SIDELINED Bundesliga Rookie of the Year, Per Gunther enjoyed a fantastic summer playing for his country. After an excellent rookie Bundesliga season with ratiopharm Ulm, Per was a key player in the German A2 National team success this summer in Belgrade. Immediately after his top performances with the A2 team, Per was invited to compete for a roster spot on the German National team for the European Championships in Poland. Unfortunately, after several excellent games and a likely spot as a third point guard, the talented young Gunther suffered a foot fracture Wednesday night September 2nd as Germany took on Slovenia at Telekom Dome in Bonn. Projected as ratiopharm Ulm's starting point guard, Per's injury puts rookie guard Kevin Kanaskie in the Ulm starting five for preseason action. Positive news within the negative, Per's fracture has been diagnosed as a six to eight week injury. After doctors treated the injury, Per returned to his hometown of Hagen Germany to be with family for the weekend before returning to Ulm to begin his rehab. Basketball fans everywhere wish Per a complete and speedy recovery.
Per Gunther: sidelined with a foot fracture ROBIN BENZING HEADS TO POLAND WITH GERMAN NATIONAL TEAM! ratiopharm Ulm forward Robin Benzing has earned a roster spot with the German National team as they travel to Poland for the 2009 European Championships. Robin starred for the German National team in Thursday nights international friendly game at Europahalle against Slovenia. The talented young Benzing started against Slovenia and led Germany in scoring with a team best 13 points in the 74-62 loss in the teams final tune-up before the European Championships in Poland.
