ULM'S DERBY WIN SLIPS AWAY!
ratiopharm Ulm controlled Saturday nights Schwabische Derby against EnBW Ludwigsburg for 37 minutes, but a late Ludwigsburg run helped the hosts take an 80-71 home win live on DSF TV. Ulm's strong effort was led by Lee Humphrey's 15 points on 5 for 7 three point shooting and Robin Benzing's 14 points off the bench. Rocky Trice and Coleman Collins added 13 points apiece for Ulm in the hardfought loss.

Saturday nights game featured two rival teams entering the new Ludwigsburg arena on positives. For Ulm, back to back wins and a YES vote for the new Arena provided momentum heading into the Schwabische Derby. Meanwhile, for Ludwigsburg, a five game winning streak and buzzer beating win over rival Walter Tigers Tubingen had the hosts feeling good.

Focused for a strong start, ratiopharm Ulm was ready for Saturday nights Schwabische Derby. Played for the first time in Ludwigsburg's new arena, both teams were excited to meet a rival in a nationally televised game on DSF TV.

At tip off, Ulm started fast attacking in transition and hitting shots. Ulm raced to a fast 14-4 lead. Christian Burns buried a three and Ulm's offense found its rhythm. Ulm post man Coleman Collins was productive in the first quarter scoring and rebounding against his former team. After Ludwigsburg's center Kyle Visser picked up his second personal foul, Ulm burst to a 7-0 run. Leading 15-6, Ludwigsburg post player Philipp Heyden converted one of two free throws but Ulm's Lee Humphrey and Christian Burns answered pushing Ulm to a 20-7 advantage. As Ulm's momentum gave them early control in the game, Ludwigsburg's young backup point guard David McCray sparked his teams comeback. McCray hit a three and pushed the ball in transition. Despite the late first quarter run, Ulm maintained a 25-14 advantage after one quarter. Christian Burns finished the first quarter with 7 points 3 rebounds while Coleman Collins and Rocky Trice tallied 5 points apiece. Ulm hit 54% from the floor while limiting Ludwigsburg to 38% in the first ten minutes.

Quarter two, Ulm worked to build their lead while Ludwigsburg worked to trim the deficit. Ludwigsburg guards David McCray and Domonic Jones aggressively attacked the basket with the dribble. Following a 7-0 Ludwigsburg run, Ulm called timeout. Coleman Collins finished a slam, but Ludwigsburg kept coming cutting the Ulm lead to one point 27-26. Ulm bounced back with several big shots as Robin Benzing, Lee Humphrey and Kevin Kanaskie buried three point shots. Ulm's 11-1 late second quarter run gave them a 40-33 halftime advantage.

At the half, Ulm had hit 46% of their shots compared to Ludwigsburg's 45% but Ulm drilled 6 of 12 threes and made 8 of 11 free throws compared to Ludwigsburg's 3 of 10 from beyond the arc and 2 of 7 from the foul line. Ulm outrebounded Ludwigsburg 18-15 in the first half as well. Robin Benzing's strong second quarter paced Ulm point production with 8 as the team's balanced scoring reflected their quality first half play. Even though the majority of Ulm's young team was playing in their first 'Derby', Ulm's 7 point halftime lead came as a result of their intensity and teamwork as they presented themselves in a focused, ready way.

As the second half opened, Ludwigsburg trimmed Ulm's lead to four, 45-41 three minutes into the third. Lee Humphrey drilled his next three and Ulm withstood the Ludwigsburg surge to hold a 59-51 lead after three.

In the fourth, Lee Humphrey buried his fifth three pointer. But Ludwigsburg continued to build momentum. Their 10-0 run pulled the hosts within one at 62-61. Robin Benzing sank a clutch three giving Ulm a 65-61 lead. Ludwigsburg's Richard Chaney and Kyle Visser scored back to back baskets to pull Ludwigsburg even. Then, the turning point of the game took place as Ulm point guard Per Gunther fouled out after an offensive charge with just over three minutes to play. Rocky Trice scored on a strong drive and Christian Burns hit a tough pullup jumper at the elbow keeping Ulm one basket ahead of Ludwigsburg. With the score even at 69, Ulm's offense moved the ball and found Christian Burns in the post. Working to the middle of the lane, Christian drew a double-team and found a wide-open Robin Benzing spotting up in the right corner. Robin's open three with 1:40 to play rimmed out, and Ludwigsburg rebounded and ran out for a fast break opportunity. Forward Richard Chaney scored giving Ludwigsburg their first lead of the game at 71-69 with just over one minute to play. After an Ulm timeout, Rocky Trice drove strong to the basket but was tied up for a jump ball returning possession to Ludwigsburg. After Ulm fouled Kyle Visser, the Ludwigsburg post man sank one of two foul shots pushing the lead to three 72-69. Lee Humphrey's shot was well-defended and the miss led to another fastbreak Ludwigsburg basket. Ulm's Christian Burns pushed the ball up the floor and scored with a strong transition layup pulling Ulm within 74-71. Christian immediately fouled the inbound pass picking up his fifth foul in the process. Kyle Bailey sank both free throws giving Ludwigsburg a 76-71 lead. Ulm suffered a turnover as they advanced the ball and Domonic Jones added two more for the hosts. After another Ulm miss, Ludwigsburg's Michael Haynes sealed the victory for Ludwigsburg at 80-71.

Domonic Jones led Ludwigsburg with 14 points while Kyle Bailey added 13 points 5 rebounds and David McCray had 11 points in the win. As a team, Ulm shot 42% for the game hitting 10 of 24 threes (42%) and converting 17 of 24 from the foul line (71%). Meanwhile, Ludwigsburg sank 49% from the floor making 3 of 17 threes (18%) and 9 of 16 free throws (56%). Ludwigsburg outrebounded Ulm 34-31 and outscored Ulm 62-16 in the paint.
