Sunday February 20th, 2011  6pm

Lokhalle   Göttingen , Germany

ratiopharm Ulm travels to Göttingen for an exciting matchup against uptempo BG Göttingen Violets Sunday at Lokhalle.  A German town with outstanding basketball tradition, the Violets have been a tremendous basketball story over the last several seasons winning the EuroChallenge last year and making a fantastic run in this seasons EuroCup.  With enthusiastic support from the loud Lokhalle fans, Göttingen has enjoyed a strong home court advantage but ratiopharm Ulm is focused for the challenge.  A meaningful game for both teams, Sunday's matchup at Lokhalle is special for Ulm guard Rocky Trice who returns to face his former team.

This season, Gottingen opened with a road win in Trier but fell to three straight losses and 1-3 start.  After back to back wins evening their record, Göttingen dropped four straight games starting with their October 23rd visit to Sportszentrum Kuhberg against ratiopharm Ulm.  After their 3-7 mark, the Violets won five straight games and seven of eight improving their record to 10-8.  Since their January 11th win over Trier, Göttingen has dropped four straight Bundesliga games falling to 10-12.

ratiopharm Ulm wing Sebastian Betz and Göttingen wing Robert Kulawick bring tremendous energy to their respective teams.

But while their Bundesliga season has been streaky, Göttingen has been extremely successful in their international competition.  Currently, the Violets are atop Group J of the EuroCup standings with a 3-1 record.  Most recently, the Violets pounded Aris BSA from Greece 77-54 Wednesday February 16th at Lokhalle.  This years strong EuroCup run came about after Gottingen enjoyed a special success last season as Head coach John Patrick and his team captured the Euro Challenge title winning an exciting Final Four played in Gottingen.  The international success opened this years exciting opportunity in the EuroCup for the Violets.  Playing in Group B, Gottingen advanced from their group which included Hemofarm of Serbia, ASVEL from France and Besiktas from Turkey.

ratiopharm Ulm and Göttingen players hustle for a loose ball earlier this season at Sportszentrum Kuhberg.  Sunday's action at Lokhalle should see more of the same.

Gottingen's 2010-2011 roster has several new faces including athletic forward Mike Scott, talented combo guard Trent Meacham, rookie playmaker from Cornell Louis Dale, former Ehingen Steeple Jermain Raffington as well as former Bayreuth forward Christoph Tetzner. An active, athletic forward, Mike Scott's versatility and explosive athleticism makes him a perfect fit for the Gottingen system.  Scott is an excellent rebounder and has been very good in transition and playing one on one giving his team 9.7pt 5.2reb 23%threes.  A smart combo guard, Trent Meacham (11ppg 2.9ast 34% threes) fills the shoes of last seasons Bundesliga Newcomer of the Year Taylor Rochestie as a three point shooting threat and playmaker for the Violets.  Rookie point guard Louis Dale has a complete skill set and tremendous potential contributing 7.5ppg 2.3reb 28% threes. Jermain Raffington and Christoph Tetzner give Gottingen a solid bench.  Returning from last seasons Violets squad are hardworking guard John Little 4.9ppg 2.6reb, three point threat Robert Kulawick 6.1ppg 37% threes, physical post man Jason Boone and athletic forward Dwayne Anderson.  Producing 7.1ppg 5.2reb, Boone is the teams best post player with a physical playing style and energeitc presence in the paint.  A key for Gottingen success, Anderson earned a spot on the Bundesliga All Star team this season and has produced 11.8ppg 5.7reb 33% threes.  Underrated athletic guard Antoine Jordan returned to Göttingen to provide versatility and athleticism on the wing and has contributed 9ppg 5.7reb with 30% three point shooting.  Also coming back to Gottingen, former Violet and Ulm guard, Kyle Bailey, like Rocky Trice, knows both sides of this matchup. Bailey has been sidelined with injury but is close to a return for the Violets.  Another key addition mid season for Göttingen has been veteran big man Michael Meeks who provides post depth and perimeter shooting from the front court.  Meeks has given Göttingen a solid 4.9ppg with 28% three point shooting in 11 games this season.  Overall the athletic and versatile lineup is well built for uptempo basketball and Sundays matchup at Lokhalle will be a tremendous challenge for ratiopharm Ulm.

ratiopharm Ulm center John Bryant leads the Bundesliga in rebounding (10.8) and efficiency.

Ulm and Gottingen are two German cities with excellent basketball tradition.  In their most recent meeting, earlier this season, ratiopharm Ulm exploded to a 20-0 second quarter run behind a focused team performance in Saturday nights 95-73 home win over BG Gottingen Saturday night October 23rd 2010 at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.   A hungry Ulm defense limited Gottingen to 39% floor shooting and a focused Ulm offense sank 33 of 35 free throws (94%) in the win.  Coleman Collins was outstanding for Ulm topscoring with 24 points 8 rebounds while Robin Benzing added 22 points 6 boards and John Bryant contributed a strong 14 points 9 boards.

Last season, Ulm and Gottingen battled down the stretch.  Tied 69-69 with 7 seconds to play, ratiopharm Ulm and Gottingen were locked in a intense basketball game set up for a fantastic finish Saturday night March 6th, 2010 at Lokhalle in Gottingen.  But the game took a strange turn as the Violets pulled out the old '8 point play' to ice the game in the final 2 seconds earning an 80-69 win.  8 point play?  After officials changed a call awarding Violet center Jason Boone with a three point play, Gottingen held a 72-69 lead.  Ulm turned the ball over on the ensuing inbound and was forced to immediately foul again with 2.4 seconds left.  Already behind the eight ball, Ulm was hit with three technical fouls and Head coach Mike Taylor was ejected giving Gottingen eight straight free throws to seal the result.

Offense Gottingen features several ballskilled players with the ability to attack the basket and break down the defense with the drive.  Attacking in transition and pushing the basketball at an uptempo pace, the Violets like to use smaller and athletic lineups to create mis-matches and emphasize one on one driving opportunities for each position.  One interesting part of the attacking Gottingen offense is the teams excellent work on the offensive boards.

Defense: Basing their game plan on ballpressure and teamwork, Gottingen excels at their fullcourt pressing and trapping defense.  The Violets have outstanding athleticism and play passing lanes extremely well.  Gottingen will randomly run and jump, trap out of control ballhandlers against pressure and double team the post.  The teams excellent individual defenders and athletic wings give opponents problems.  One benefit from their defense is the easy baskets it produces for their offense.  Gottingen's aggressive team defense is a key to their early season success.
