ULM VISIT TELEKOM BASKETS BONN!

ratiopharm Ulm @ Telekom Baskets Bonn

Sunday March 27th, 2011  5pm

Telekom Dome    Bonn , Germany

ratiopharm Ulm makes a weekend road trip to Bonn for a challenging matchup against the physical Telekom Baskets Bonn team Sunday evening at Telekom Dome.  With momentum from Sunday's double overtime home win over Trier and the signing of center John Bryant, ratiopharm Ulm is focused for Sunday's test in Bonn.

ratiopharm Ulm faces a physical Telekom Baskets Bonn team Sunday at Telekom Dome in Bonn.

ratiopharm Ulm took the team on a tour of the new ratiopharm Arena Thursday afternoon in Ulm and while the team and staff enjoyed the time learning more about the Max Boegl construction project, the big surprise on Thursday was Ulm GM Thomas Stoll presenting center John Bryant with a two year contract which the big man signed on site.  A terrific sign for ratiopharm Ulm's future, the momentum from the tour of the new arena and signing of the Bundesliga's leading rebounder and most efficient player gives ratiopharm Ulm an extra positive boost heading into the weekend road trip to Bonn.

This season, Telekom Baskets Bonn have several new faces on their roster.  Super quick point guard Nic Wise (13.3ppg 3.1ast 30%threes) is the new floor general for Bonn.  After an excellent career at the University of Arizona, Wise plays his rookie season as a professional with Bonn carrying on their outstanding tradition of point guard play following in the footsteps of Jason Gardner, Steve Wisniewski, EJ Rowland and Jared Jordan.  Wise has been a catalyst for the Bonn offense and has established himself as a top playmaker in the Bundesliga.  Former Koeln 99er Jeremy Hunt has returned to the Bundesliga in Bonn and is currently the teams leading scorer at 13.3ppg 2.9reb 2.4ast 38% three point shooting.  A skillful scorer and athletic player, Hunt is a go-to type player with tremendous scornig ability.  Talented guard Folarin Campbell  was a key factor on the Bonn team before being released last month.    Athletic wing Mark Tyndale joined Bonn after playing last season with the Iowa Energy in the NBDL and the former Temple small forward has produced 6.9ppg 2.8reb 32% threes.  Finally, physical big man Jacob Jaacks (5.4ppg 3.8reb) joins Bonn adding a quality inside player with ability to play the four or five.   Both Tyndale and Jaacks enjoyed strong performances against ratiopharm Ulm earlier this season in the December 4th, 2010 matchup at Sportszentrum Kuhberg.

Back from last seasons Bonn team are several key players. Veteran center Chris Ensminger (12.9ppg 8.4reb) remains one of the most experienced and physical post players in the league.  Ensminger has been an outstanding big man for Bonn and Paderborn before joining Bonn last season.  In last years Bundesliga All Star game, Chris starred and was named MVP. This season, the 38 year old big man earned another spot on the All Star team and has continued his outstanding play with Bonn.   Along side Ensminger, talented young German forward Tim Ohlbrecht returns to Bonn.  One of the best young German big men, Ohlbrecht enjoyed an outstanding season last year, his first with Bonn.  After a strong preseason, Ohlbrecht was injured forcing him to miss the first several weeks of the season.  Working through an injury filled season, Tim has produced 5.8ppg 4.3reb.  Athletic forward Alex King also is back with Bonn and the combo forward is a tremendous defensive player for his team.  Improving his offense season by season, King plays both the small forward and an athletic power forward.  Rounding out the Bonn roster, young German players Sajmen Hauer, Fabian Thulig and Jonas Wohlfarth-Bottermann are working to develop into the next generation of key bench players that will replace former dependable backups JJ Strasser and Artur Kolodziejski.

Bonn's 2010-2011 season started slow with a 1-3 mark before the team reeled off 3 victories in 4 games.   After back to back losses to Ludwigsburg and Bamberg, Bonn rolled to five consecutive wins including their 87-79 road win over ratiopharm Ulm December 4th, 2010.  Bonn split a six game stretch moving their record to 11-9.  But a 4 game losing streak and 1-5 stretch has the team fighting for a playoff spot at 13-14.  In their last home game, Bonn beat Bayreuth 83-55 March 18th at Telekom Dome before dropping a tight 75-73 road game in Oldenburg last weekend March 20th at Ewe Arena.

Along with their exciting Bundesliga schedule, Bonn also competes in EuroChallenge group E.  Competing against Prostejov from the Czech Republic, KK Zagreb from Croatia and Krka Novo Mesto from Slovenia, Bonn is currently 1-2 with a 100-96 road win November 16th at Zagreb and two losses coming to Prostejov 81-75 November 24th and 74-71 home against Krka Novo Mesto December 1st at Telekom Dome.  Bonn beat KK Zagreb 79-62 at home December 8th, fell in Prostejov 86-63 December 14th and completed their Eurochallenge schedule with a 70-65 road loss in Krka Novo Mesto.

Both Ulm and Bonn enjoy rich basketball traditions and the two teams have played some entertaining and competitive games against each other over the last three years highlighted by 2008-2009 seasons Bundesliga playoff matchup.   Head Coach Michael Koch and his team, well-known for their unique pink uniforms representing main sponsor Telekom, are always among the most talented and athletic in the Bundesliga.

Earlier this season, ratiopharm Ulm rallied throughout an exciting fourth quarter comeback but their late charge fell short as Telekom Baskets Bonn claimed an 87-79 win at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm Saturday night December, 4th, 2010.  Bonn's hot shooting saw the team sink 10 of 22 threes led by Jeremy Hunt's 24 points on 5 of 9 three point accuracy.  Ulm was led by forward Robin Benzing with 19 points, guard Rocky Trice finished with 16 and John Bryant 14 in the loss.

With snow falling outside in Bonn over the weekend, temperatures dropped in the former West German capital city.  Sunday evening January 3rd, 2010, Ulm's ballmovement nearly froze and the teams offense went cold in an 82-59 road loss at Telekom Dome in Bonn. As Bonn capitalized on several Ulm defensive breakdowns, the hosts put together a late first half run building a 42-31 lead.  Missing ballmovement, Ulm's offense sputtered to 5 assists for the game and 28 points in the last twenty minutes as Bonn broke the game open hitting 6 of 11 threes in the second half. Coleman Collins led Ulm's attack with 16 points 9 boards in the loss. Like the winter temperature dip, Ulm's season of highs and lows continued with a cold night in Bonn.

Trailing Telekom Baskets Bonn by 17 points 67-50 with 7:34 remaining in the fourth quarter, ratiopharm Ulm huddled in a timeout facing an 0-2 deficit in their best-of-five Bundesliga quarterfinal series. With their backs against the wall, Ulm rallied together for a tremendous comeback outscoring Bonn 15-0 down the stretch pulling within one 70-69.  Unfortunately for Ulm, the storybook ending was not to be.  After a defensive stop gave Ulm the ball down one with 18 seconds to play, an errant pass turnover gave the ball back to Bonn.  Following Bonn foul shots, Ulm had the ball down two 71-69 with 2.7 seconds to play. Inbounding the ball to point guard Dru Joyce, Ulm's floor general raced the length of the floor for a desperation runner just inside the top of the key.  As the ball banked off the back of the rim, Ulm's stunning comeback fell just short.  Ulm's first home playoff game in ten years, fell just short of a Sportszentrum Kuhberg classic as ratiopharm Ulm's comeback fell just short at the final buzzer.

2008-2009:

PLAYOFFS:

Offense:  Bonn has excelled in transition over the last several seasons and the trend should continue once again with new point guard Nic Wise and talented scorers Jeremy Hunt and Mark Tyndale.  Bonn features one of the most physical front courts in the Bundesliga with veteran Chris Ensminger and newly added Jacob Jaacks.  A team which runs many quick hitter set plays, individual scoring talent makes the Bonn offense difficult to defend.

Defense: An aggressive team defense, Bonn will rely on their physical post players and athletic perimeters defenders.  In the last several seasons Bonn has used their pressure man to man defense to create offensive opportunities in transition.  Bonn will also press and change defenses usually with a 3-2 zone.
