ULM BEATS BAYREUTH!

ratiopharm Ulm earned an important home win Sunday evening at Sportszentrum Kuhberg beating BBC Bayreuth 82-73 behind 23 points 12 boards from center John Bryant and 21 points 10 rebounds from forward Robin Benzing.  An 11-0 run to close the third quarter gave Ulm a 66-54 advantage heading into the fourth where they held off Bayreuth down the stretch.  Focused at the foul line, ratiopharm Ulm sank 26 of 29 free throws and a strong team defensive effort with hardwork on the boards pushed Ulm to a 42-30 advantage on the glass.

Both teams knew the importance of Sunday's BEKO Basketball Bundesliga Game Day 14 matchup.  While Bayreuth entered the game with upset on their mind, ratiopharm Ulm was focused to protect their home court and make steps forward in the season standings.

Center John Bryant won the tip and Ulm attacked for the games opening possession.  Bayreuth defense rose to the occassion with a block of Bryant's dive cut.  Bayreuth's Koko Archibong scored the first points of the game with a post move from the left block.  A Per Gunther baseline drive resulted in an assist and easy layup for Rocky Trice for Ulm's first basket.  After a Jared Reiner post finish, Per Gunther knifed down the lane for a layin evening the score 4-4.  Two Jaivon Harris free throws pushed Bayreuth up 6-4 but a great Rocky Trice pass fed John Bryant for a dive cut finish making it 6-6 at the 7 minute mark.  Excellent Ulm teamwork and ballmovement led to a Robin Benzing left wing three at 6:27.  Marcus Ginyard answered with a left wing three for Bayreuth evening the score at 9.  John Bryant made a strong post move drawing a foul and sank two free throws giving Ulm an 11-9 lead with 5:26 remaining in the first.  Jared Reiner finished for Bayreuth.  At the midpoint of the first quarter, the game was even at 11.

Jaivon Harris drilled a left wing transition three giving the guests a 14-11 lead.  Per Gunther hit Robin Benzing who fed a diving John Bryant for another easy basket pulling Ulm within 14-13.  A Basti Betz free throw tied the game at 14 with 3:52 to play in the opening quarter.  Rocky Trice picked up a steal and drew a foul that led to two free throws and a 16-14 Ulm advantage.  Per Gunther found Basti Betz open in the left corner in transition and Betz drilled the triple pushing Ulm to a 19-14 lead.  Koko Archibong made one of two free throws for Bayreuth.  Two Sean Sonderleiter free throws gave Ulm a 21-15 margin.  Marcus Ginyard ripped through and made a strong drive to the basket finishing with a slam for Bayreuth.  Ginyard went strong again on the next Bayreuth possession earning a trip to the foul line.  The two Ginyard foul shots closed first quarter scoring with Ulm up 21-19.

As quarter two began, Travis Walton found Coleman Collins with a quick pass leading to a smooth Collins reverse layup.  Robin Benzing drove strong to the hoop earning a foul.  Two Benzing free throws put Ulm up 25-21 with 7:44 to go.  Two Jared Reiner free throws pulled Bayreuth within 25-23.  John Bryant cleaned up an Ulm miss with a put back basket and Ulm led 27-23 with five minutes remaining in the half.  Per Gunther found John Bryant in a beautiful ballscreen and roll play which the Ulm center finished with authority and a slam for Ulm's 29-25 with 4:24 to play.  Per Gunther finished a transition layup through a foul for an And1 three point play lifting Ulm to a 32-25 advantage with 4:03.  Bayreuth used a timeout.  Marcus Ginyard finished a strong drive on Bayreuth's next possession before Per Gunther drew a foul on a strong drive in transition.  Per sank both free throws and Ulm led 34-27 with 3:11 in the half.  Robin Benzing followed suit sinking two free throws of his own and Ulm led 36-27 with 2:16 to go.  After an Ulm turnover, Danny Gibson finished a midlane shot bringing Bayreuth to 36-29 with 38 seconds.  In the last possession of the first half, Bayreuth held the ball running down the clock.  In the closing seconds, a Gibson miss bounded long off the rim and was tracked down by a hustling Simon Schmitz who quickly stuck a left elbow fadeaway just before the first half buzzer.  With the last second score, Ulm led 36-31.

At the half, Ulm held a 36-31 lead and had hit 38% from the floor including 2 of 9 threes (22%) and 14 of 15 free throws (93%) while outrebounding Bayreuth 22-16.  Bayreuth shot 32% from the field making 2 of 9 threes and 7 of 8 foul shots (88%).  John Bryant's 10 points and 5 rebounds powered the Ulm attack in the first half while Per Gunther added 7 points 4 assists and Robin Benzing had 7 points 6 boards.  Marcus Ginyard led Bayreuth with 9 points 2 rebounds.

As the second half began, Bayreuth attempted to change things up by playing zone defenses against Ulm.  Jaivon Harris hit a top of the key three cutting Ulm's lead to 36-34.  Per Gunther responded with a post-reaction top of the key three for Ulm rebuilding the cushion to 39-34.  Jared Reiner got an easy basket for Bayreuth finishing a dive cut.  Rocky Trice answered with a left elbow pull up jumper.  Ulm led 41-36 with 8:30 to play in the third.  Rocky Trice drilled a top of the key three boosting Ulm's lead to 8, 44-36 at the 7:56 mark.  Koko Archibong scored on a stickback for Bayreuth before Rocky Trice finished a basket cut layup for Ulm.  Jared Reiner nailed a foul line jumper for Bayreuth.  Rocky Trice drilled a jump shot from the top of the key off a nice pass out of the post from John Bryant.  Jaivon Harris finished a baseline cut layup and converted a strong driving AND1 for Bayreuth trimming the Ulm advantage.  John Bryant hit a strong right hand jump hook from the next post touch for Ulm before Reiner hit a soft baseline shot for Bayreuth.  With five minutes to play in the third, Ulm held a 50-47 lead.

Marcus Ginyard got to the basket for two and Ulm's lead was one 50-49.  Rocky Trice fed John Bryant for a pick and roll basket before Harris hit another top of the key three tying the score at 52 with 3:23 in the third.  Hardwork from John Bryant on the offensive boards led to a three point play finishing through a foul.  The three point play gave Ulm a 55-52 lead with 3:03 to go.  Danny Gibson scored the next two for Bayreuth pulling the guests to 55-54.  Moments later ratiopharm Ulm raced to an 11-0 surge closing the third quarter. It started with a Per Gunther drive and dish to a cutting Robin Benzing who slammed home two.  Lee Humphrey hit a top of the key three off a good pass from Sean Sonderleiter and Ulm was up 60-54.  Bayreuth called timeout with 2:15 remaining in the third.  Basti Betz' hardwork on the offensive boards gave Ulm an extra possession which led to two Robin Benzing free throws.  Robin Benzing grabbed a defensive rebound late in the quarter and was fouled.  With Bayreuth over the limit, Robin sank two more free throws with 57 seconds on the clock.  Lee Humphrey finished the quarter scoring on a drive to the basket for two.  Ulm took a 66-54 advantage into the quarter break.

In the fourth quarter, Ulm's  Robin Benzing picked up his third and fourth foul in the first minute.  Energy plays from Basti Betz on the offensive boards and drawing a charge kept the Ulm game going.  John Bryant's efforts on the offensive boards drew a foul and the Ulm center sank one of two giving Ulm a 67-55 lead with 7:37 remaining.  Koko Archibong finished in the paint for Bayreuth cutting the deficit to ten.  Archibong then rattled in two free throws bringing Bayreuth to 67-59.  Basti Betz scored on a strong drive late in the shot clock against the Bayreuth zone rebuilding Ulm's lead to 69-59 at 6:15.  Ginyard went baseline for a reverse layup before John Bryant's work on the offensive boards got him another rebound and putback basket.  Ulm led 71-61 with 5:42 to go.  Bayreuth took a timeout.  Out of the huddle, Bayreuth's Marcus Ginyard stepped up again hitting a short left elbow jump shot.   At the five minute mark, Ulm led 71-63.

After a defensive stop, Ulm executed a fundamentally sound high-low post play that resulted in a John Bryant layup through foul three point play.  Ulm was up 74-63.  Jared Reiner converted a short bank shot off a nice pass from Archibong and Ulm's margin was 74-65 with 4:20 to go. Moments later Per Gunther penetrated and found Robin Benzing for a key three from the left wing.  Ulm led 77-65 at 3:50.  Two Jared Reiner free throws brought Bayreuth back to ten 77-67 with 3:15.  Two Robin Benzing free throws pushed Ulm ahead 79-67 at 2:56.  Jaivon Harris hit a long two from the top and the lead was back to ten 79-69 with 2:43 remaining.  The teams traded empty possessions before an errant post pass resulted in an Ulm turnover.  Ulm called timeout with 1:33 to play with a ten point lead.  Bayreuth's Danny Gibson drew a foul and made one of two free throws.  Unfortunately for Ulm, a missed free throw blockout allowed Pete Campbell to collect the offensive rebound with 1:29 on the clock.  Campbell was left unguarded and proceeded to drill a left corner three.  Instantly, Ulm's lead was cut to six, a two possession game.  Ulm used another timeout.  With a 79-73 lead and 1:25 to play, Ulm needed to sharpen up their game on both ends of the floor to finish.

Out of the timeout, Ulm entered the ball from the sideline to point guard Per Gunther who intelligently milked the game clock down.  With the floor spread, John Bryant sprinted into a ballscreen with the Ulm point guard.  Per penetrated into the lane and drew defenders to him before passing to an open Robin Benzing at the top.  Robin's three was offline and Bayreuth pulled down the rebound with 1 minute remaining.  Counter attacking in transition, Bayreuth's Jaivon Harris drew a foul.  Stepping to the line with 56.9 seconds to go, Harris missed both free throws. 

Capitalizing on the opportunity, Per Gunther controlled the clock and ran seconds down. Driving to the middle, Per zipped a pass to Robin Benzing  on the left wing.  Robin received the pass and attacked a gap in the Bayreuth defense.  Slicing into the lane, Robin drew a foul earning two free throws with 40 seconds remaining.  Robin made one of two free throws pushing Ulm to an 80-73 advantage.  As Bayreuth attacked in their next possession, Sebastian Betz rotated over to block Danny Gibson's layup attempt with 35 seconds left.  Bayreuth's endline inbound play led to a Pete Campbell three on the right wing which rimmed out.  Fighting for the loose ball rebound, Robin Benzing came down with the key board and was fouled with 30 seconds.  This time, Robin stepped up to sink both free throws putting the finishing touches on Ulm's 82-73 win.

ratiopharm Ulm was led by center John Bryant's 23 points 12 rebound double double while Robin Benzing added a 21 point 10 rebound double double of his own. Rocky Trice finished with 13 points 5 rebounds while Per Gunther finished with 10 points 6 assists in the win.  ratiopharm Ulm wing Sebastian Betz also gave his team quality minutes filled with energy plays and extra effort as he scored 6 points grabbed 7 boards blocked one shot and drew a charge.  As a team, Ulm shot 42% from the floor making 6 of 20 threes (30%) and 26 of 29 free throws (90%).  Ulm outrebounded Bayreuth 42-30.  Bayreuth also sank 42% of their shots including 5 of 17 threes (29%) and 14 of 23 free throws (61%).  Ulm suffered 14 turnovers to Bayreuth's 7 in the game.  Jaivon Harris led Bayreuth with 19 points on 3 of 5 three point accuracy, Jared Reiner added 16 points 6 rebounds, Marcus Ginyard contributed 15 points and Koko Archibong had 11 points 7 boards in the loss.
