regio-tv report

For ratiopharm Ulm, Sunday's game against Bayreuth, both teams will be ready for this important early season matchup.  While Bayreuth is focused for a surprise that would help them establish themselves in the Bundesliga as an 'Aufsteiger', ratiopharm Ulm is focused for an important win while protecting home court advantage.  Ulm enters Sunday's game with 4 wins while Bayreuth brings 3.  As the Bundesliga schedule turns toward Christmas and New Year's holidays, both Ulm and Bayreuth will be focused for Sunday's game.

ratiopharm Ulm center John Bryant leads the Bundesliga in rebounding at 9.5rebpg and is third in blocks at 1.3pg

Bayreuth's 2010-2011 team features several players who starred on their Pro A championship team as well as several experienced players who know the Bundesliga well.  Bayreuth head coach Andreas Wagner has achieved the unique feat of winning promotion with two different organizations Nordlingen and Bayreuth.  Veteran point guard Danny Gibson knows head coach Andreas Wagner's system from a season together in Nordlingen and after a terrific year in Holland, Gibson has returned to produce 12.6ppg 3.6ast and 39% three point shooting.  Smooth left handed shooting guard Jaivon Harris is an experienced veteran at the Pro A level and has starred in Bayreuth.  This season, the former Ohio University Bobcat is averaging 7.2ppg while hitting 48% from three as he establishes himself in the Bundesliga.  Former North Carolina Tarheel Marcus Ginyard is contributing a solid 9.9ppg 3.2reb in his rookie season and Bundesliga veteran Koko Archibong (8.9ppg 4.2reb 23% threes) adds a quality four man who knows what it takes to win in the Bundesliga.  In the post, veteran center Jared Reiner (13.2ppg 8.4reb) adds skill and experience on the block.  Reiner also knows the Bundesliga well after previously playing in both Bamberg and Bremerhaven.  A key to Bayreuth's Pro A championship season was sharpshooting forward Pete Campbell and this year Campbell (7.2ppg 40% threes) also adds a deep threat dimension for the Bayreuth offensive attack.  Talented young German point guard Simon Schmitz (2.8ppg 42% threes) and skilled young German post player Phillipp Heyden add depth in the rotation for Bayreuth.  Forward Steve Wachalski and post man Stefan Schmidt also add depth to the team.  A key for Bayreuth, hardworking combo guard Osvaldo Jeanty, who has been among the best three point shooters in the Bundesliga with Nordlingen and Giessen, was injured a few weeks back and will be out for a significant amount of time. As a replacement, Bayreuth recently added guard Kenny Barker who played with Bayern Munich in the Pro A last season.  Along with the addition of the two guard Barker, Bayreuth also added power forward Hamin Quantinance and one of the two new additions will play Sunday against Ulm.

ratiopharm Ulm point guard Per Gunther is always in attack mode.

After winning the Pro A last year, this season Bayreuth is determined to re-establish their team in the Beko Basketball Bundesliga.  A team with proud tradition, Bayreuth's roots go back to 1975 before changing to USC Bayreuth in 1979.  The first outstanding era in Bayreuth basketball came in the mid to late 1980's as the team was known as Steiner Bayreuth.  In 1989, Steiner Bayreuth won the German championship and the German Cup.  In 1992, Bayreuth was relegated from the Bundesliga but after a successful 2.Bundesliga South championship in 1993, the team returned back to the first division.  Steiner left Bayreuth in 1997 and the team became known as Basket Bayreuth.  In 1999, amid financial problems, Bayreuth was relegated once again down to the 2.Bundesliga South.  Since that time, Bayreuth has been among the best teams in the 2.Bundesliga South competing against ratiopharm Ulm during the 2002-2006 seasons.  Last season, Bayreuth won the German second division Pro A while also claiming the DBB Cup.

ratiopharm Ulm forward Robin Benzing has picked up his offensive production in the last two games.

Over the last few seasons, ratiopharm Ulm has not faced Bayreuth since the two teams were in different leagues.  The last time the two teams me was while both were members of the 2.Bundesliga South during Ulm's 2005-2006 championship season.  In fact, the last meeting between the two teams was a classic game which became a key victory for ratiopharm Ulm on their way to the Aufstieg.

ratiopharm Ulm point guard Travis Walton

March 30, 2006 was the last meeting between Ulm and Bayreuth and it played out as a memorable game.  4 players fouled out.  A 33-22 Ulm-Bayreuth foul count resulted in an unbalanced 46 to 26 Bayreuth-Ulm free throws attempted.  Crazy lineups on the floor down the stretch forced Ulm to play "small ball".  A fantastic effort from both teams in one of the most exciting games of the season saw both teams work through ups and downs and play through highs and lows as momentum swung quarter to quarter.  But in the end, it was momentum from Ulm center Maksym Shtein's 2 money three balls that propelled ratiopharm Ulm to a 16-6 overtime period and one of the most significant wins in team history. 25-1 ratiopharm earned a true team win by overcoming adversity to record an amazing 105-95 overtime win at Oberfrankenhalle Friday night in Bayreuth Germany.  Shtein's 20 point 8 rebound performance was one of many key contributions for Ulm who received a game best 25 points from forward Konrad Wysocki, 20 points from Emeka Erege and a 14 point 10 rebound double-double from Jonathan Levy. Ulm's win combined with Jena's loss in Chemnitz gives Ulm a 3 game lead with 4 to play.

ratiopharm Ulm improved to 11-0 in 2.Bundesliga South play with a hard earned 82-67 home victory over visiting BBC Bayreuth Saturday night at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in Ulm.  Jonathan Levy topscored with 21 points and Jeff Gibbs added a powerful double double of 17 points and 16 rebounds as Ulm handed the shorthanded Bayreuth team their 4th loss of the season and second at Sportszentrum Kuhberg in two months.  Playing with only 7 players due to injuries and player moves, Bayreuth gave outstanding effort despite their less than pefect circumstances.  Former Ulm shooting guard Logi Gunnarsson impressed his former fans from the perimeter while big man Brandon Griffin pounded the boards and the paint --- both led Bayreuth scoring with 19 points apiece.  Setting the tone early, Ulm jumped out to a 9-0 lead and never looked back.  Playing with the lead from tip to buzzer, Ulm established a 10 point (47-37) halftime lead and took control of the game early in the third quarter building a 20 point advantage before Bayreuth fought back.  ratiopharm Ulm's team defense and team play added up to the teams 11th win this season and kept the team rolling right along atop the 2.Bundesliga South.
