Oostende Second half surge too much for Ulm!

Base Oostende put 5 players in double figures led by an excellent game from talented wing Jimmy Baxter's 23 points as Head Coach Vlada Vukoicic and his top Belgian team won their preseason home debut at beautiful Sleuyter Arena convincingly over ratiopharm Ulm 94-62 Saturday night in day one of the Base Cup.  Oostende raced to a 21-12 lead after one quarter behind 7 points from Baxter and 6 from Veselin Petrovic.  Ulm started slow shooting 30% in quarter.  After five minutes in the second quarter, Ulm trailed 32-25 before a late Oostende run sent the teams into halftime with a 46-31 score.  Out of the halftime lockerroom, Ulm responded immediately with an 11-0 run cutting the deficit to 46-42 forcing an Oostende timeout.  From that point, Oostende made two terrific runs outscoring Ulm 22-4 to finish the third quarter and 22-14 in the fourth.  Petrovic chipped in 15 points while point guard Rashid Atkins scored 13 points with 6 rebounds and 8 assists in a solid all around game while former Bremerhaven center Matt Haryasz and shooting guard Ivan Paunic scored 11 points apiece for Oostende who shot 51% from the floor and dished out a quality 28 team assists.  Dan Fitzgerald led Ulm with 11 points and Romeo Travis added 10 as the only two Ulmers to reach double figures. In the loss, Ulm suffered 28 turnovers which was clearly the downfall.  Playing without injured starting point guard Dru Joyce, 20 year old point guard Per Gunther started for Ulm and worked 32 minutes scoring 7 points with 6 assists in a solid game.  Jeff Gibbs added 7 points 5 rebounds before leaving the game in the mid-third with a minor knee injury forcing him to miss the rest of the game.  At the final buzzer, Oostende showed their class and quality in their preseason home debut while ratiopharm Ulm could take much feedback on the game and areas the team must improve to compete against high level teams.

Ulm Lets Lead Slip Sunday Against Antwerp!

ratiopharm Ulm bounced back in Sundays second day of Base Cup action building solid leads in both halves before a late Antwerp run sparked by former Bundesliga All stars Tim Black and Brandon Gay pushed Antwerp Giants to an 81-74 win.  Ulm started strong in the first quarter marching to a 19-12 lead before Antwerp fought back in the second quarter.  Ulm took a 38-36 lead into halftime and once again started the third quarter with a strong run.  Ulm built a 14 point lead behind an excellent stretch from forward Romeo Travis, Lee Humphrey and Dan Fitzgerald.  Antwerp capitalized on Ulm mistakes in the late third to cut the deficit to 57-55 after three and Brandon Gay and Tim Black made key plays in the fourth to help the Giants gain the lead.  The former Trier forward Gay topscored for Antwerp with 24 points and 6 rebounds while Brian Hopkins added 22 points and Tim Black chipped in 15 points 5 rebounds.  Romeo Travis led Ulm with 14 points, Lee Humphrey added 13 points and Dan Fitzgerald 12 with Humphrey and Fitzgerald drilling four three pointers apiece.  Ulm shot 45% from the floor while holding Antwerp to 41% shooting but Ulm turned the ball over 18 times compared with Antwerps 9.  Antwerp also made 18 of 22 free throws (82%) compared with Ulm's 14 of 21 (67%).  Ulm was once again without starting point guard Dru Joyce who rested a minor foot injury.  In his place, rookie Per Gunther once again gained valuable experience and played well scoring a preseason best 9 points hitting 5 of 7 free throws with 3 assists and 3 rebounds.  Ulm All Star Jeff Gibbs played limited minutes (20) resting his minor knee injury from Saturday nights game and was still effective scoring 8 points with 9 boards and 3 assists.

ratiopharm Ulm's weekend in Oostende Belgium playing in the Base Cup provided the team excellent preseason feedback against quality competition. Several key bench players gained valuable experience and the Ulm staff learned more about the strengths and areas needing improvement of the new team. In Sunday's Base Cup Tournament title game, Base Oostende topped Deutsche Bank Skyliners 67-60 in an excellent preseason game.  The competition helped all four teams prepare and the weekend was quality preseason basketball at Sleuyter Arena in Oostende Belgium.
