ratiopharm Ulm Advances in German Cup with 101-67 win
ratiopharm Ulm used a strong team effort to beat Heuchelhof 101-67 in German Cup play Wednesday night near Wurzburg Germany. Every player scored for Ulm as Mike Taylor's team coasted to their second win of the season and advanced to meet the Chemnitz 99ers Wednesday October 20th in C-Town. Ulm played in spurts jumping out to an early lead and assuming control of the game. Pouding the ball inside and running the floor, Ulm players drew fouls and earned easy baskets. Although the offense executed fairly well in the first quarter, Ulm's defense --- which dominated the teams regular season opening win over Ehingen --- was not in top form. Lacking a little intensity, the team was beaten to loose balls seemingly content to ttrade baskets with their third division opponent on the evening. After one quarter Ulm was up 29-21. Antoine Sinclair subbed into the game and made an immediate impact grabbing 5 offensive boards in the first half. The 6'5 forward also scored effectively inside helping Ulm open up their lead. Despite leading 55-41, Ulm players and staff were not completely pleased with the first half defensive effort. Talking things over at the half, the team refocused their efforts and responded with a more intense second half. Ulm point guard Michael Bree set the tone with excellent defensive play and outstanding offensive playmaking. Bree pushed the ball in transition and penetrated to find teammates totaling 7 assists on the evening. Shooting guard Peter Heizer scored in transition and drilled a corner three off Bree penetration in Ulm's 3rd quarter run. Holding Heuchelhof to 10 third quarter points, Ulm blew the game open leading 78-51 after three. Subbing in the bench to build for experience, Ulm rested several starters for Saturdays road trip to Lich. Christian Grosse excelled in the final quarter finishing penetration strong, drilling a three pointer and hitting a shot clock beating baseline J from the left corner off an endline inbound play. Forwards Florian Mobius and Antoine Sinclair logged key second half minutes and Tobi Waitzinger came on to sink two free throws and grab 2 rebounds. Veteran Dennis Woolfolk also played extremely well pressuring Heuchelhof players and coming up with a team best 4 steals. The 37 year old guard puncutated Ulm's win with a breakaway slam to the delight of his teammates and staff. Chrisitan Grosse sank two free throws in the final seconds to put Ulm over the century mark. Peter Heizer led Ulm scorers with 19 points as he finished attacking drives and hit a perfect four for four from the foul line. Point guard Christian Grosse turned in another quality performance scoring 15 points with 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Grosse was also perfect from the foul line at an impressive 8 for 8 mark. Ulm center Maksym Shtein overpowered Heuchelhof post players inside on his way to 14 points and 6 boards and Emeka Erege added 11 points to the win. Ulm's spark on the evening came in the form of forward Antoine Sinclair who came off the bench with 10 points and 8 energizing rebounds. Sinclair's performance earned him Taylorhoops.com Player of the Game honors.

For the next round of the German Cup, Ulm travels to east Germany for a matchup with Mike T's former team, the Chemnitz 99ers. Chemnitz won on the road beating Breitengussbach by 11 in other Wednesday night action. Ulm returns to action Saturday night when they travel north of Frankfurt to meet TV Lich for an 8pm tip.
